In this course, you will learn how occupational therapists work alongside communities to support participation, inclusion and wellbeing. You will explore how opportunities for everyday engagement are shaped by place, relationships, culture and broader social and structural factors that influence access, equity and justice.
Building on your understanding of occupation and participation, you will examine how community strengths, collective identities and shared environments influence how people engage in daily life. You will explore health-promoting and community-based approaches used in occupational therapy, including partnership building, capacity strengthening and designing initiatives that reflect community priorities.
Through workshops, field-based learning and a work-integrated learning experience in real or simulated community contexts, you will develop skills in community engagement, needs analysis and planning occupation-focused strategies. You will practise working with diverse groups, analysing participation barriers and facilitating community-level initiatives while reflecting on your role as an ethical and socially responsive emerging practitioner.
By the end of the course, you will be able to apply occupational perspectives to community contexts and contribute to initiatives that promote participation, inclusion and meaningful engagement across diverse settings.
