In this course, you will learn how occupational therapists support individuals whose cognitive, neurological or sensory abilities influence participation in everyday life. You will explore how the brain, nervous system and sensory processing contribute to occupational performance, and how changes resulting from injury, illness or developmental conditions affect attention, memory, perception, motor coordination, sensory regulation and participation in meaningful activities.
Through case-based learning, practical workshops and simulation-based learning activities, you will develop skills in assessing cognitive, neurological and sensory function and planning safe, occupation-centred interventions. You will apply professional reasoning to analyse participation challenges and support individuals experiencing neurological, cognitive or sensory changes across a range of life contexts.
You will integrate knowledge from neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, cognitive science and sensory processing frameworks to understand how neurological and cognitive changes influence everyday occupations. Learning activities will focus on cognitive screening, functional observation, sensory assessment, activity analysis, environmental modification and the use of compensatory and restorative approaches. You will also explore how digital tools and technologies can support cognitive and neurological rehabilitation.
Throughout the course, you will consider safety, cultural responsiveness, communication needs, evidence-informed practice and ethical decision-making when enabling cognitive, neurological and sensory participation across diverse practice settings.
