This course introduces you to the concepts necessary for the critical study and analysis of game mechanics and game systems. You will examine a tradition of non-digital games, identifying discrete mechanics that underpin their designs for example dice, cards, counters, and randomisation.
You will design, prototype, and test non-digital games, and explore how these designs can be programatically translated for digital games contexts.
Concepts of game design, mechanics, narrative and character will be explored with reference to both traditional and new media. You will develop the ability to analyse and identify these precedents in a way that improves your own design-based approaches to making games.
