This course prepares students to work as teachers in early childhood settings. The course focuses on the education and care of children from birth to 8 in early childhood settings, and provides students with professional learning to foster positive development and learning in infants, toddlers and preschool aged children. Emphasis is given to developing partnerships with families of young children and collaborating with other professionals in supporting young children in their development and learning.
Students develop competence in pedagogical approaches through professional experience, projects and other practical learning experiences and make links with theory and practice drawn from both Australian and international contexts and research.
This program utilises a range of formative, summative and reflective assessment methods to evaluate learning. The aim of assessment is to develop pre-service teacher’ skills in critical thinking and reflective practice. Assessment components include formal assessments and informal self-assessments so that students can monitor their own learning. Assessment will be used to provide students with feedback on their progress.
As recognised 4-year qualified early childhood teachers, graduates can work in all fields of early childhood.
Students are required to undertake a minimum 80 days of supervised professional placements over the duration of the course at a range of early childhood settings.

Advanced Standing/ Academic Credit/ Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
You may be entitled to apply for credit so your previous learning, whether formal or informal, or experience counts toward your RMIT program. Formal learning can include previous study in higher education, vocational education, or adult and community education. Informal learning can include on the job learning or various kinds of work and life experience. Credit can reduce the amount of study needed to complete a degree.
RMIT permits eligible offer holders to defer the commencement of their studies. If you wish to defer it is very important that you do not enrol. You may be eligible to defer your program if you do so before the last day to enrol for your commencing semester.

The Student Loan Fund provides interest-free loans to RMIT students who are experiencing severe financial difficulties due to unforeseen circumstances.
RMIT supports a comprehensive scholarship program which addresses some of the financial, educational and circumstantial disadvantages our students can face through their studies. More than 2000 scholarships worth millions of dollars are awarded annually.
