This is an apprenticeship program.
The Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician is for people who are employed as electrical apprentices.
This certificate provides you with the skills to select, install, set up, test, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment. On-the-job training with your employer is combined with studying at RMIT. You’ll complete practical and theoretical classes to gain the skills and knowledge to work at a trade level in the electrical industry.
When you graduate, you’ll have satisfied the Electrical Regulatory Authority Council’s requirements to become a licensed electrician.

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work.
You'll have access to online resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, reports, oral classes, presentations, and practical assignments.
You'll learn about:
- identifying work health and safety hazards and document control measure
- fabrication, dismantling and assembling of utilities industry components
- use of drawings, diagrams, cable schedules, standards, codes and specifications
- solving problems in AC and DC circuits
- arranging circuits, control and protection for general electrical installations
- troubleshooting and repairing faults in low-voltage electrical apparatus and circuits
- developing and connecting electrical control circuits
- installing low-voltage wiring, appliances and accessories

Career
Skills in electrotechnology are in high demand, in industries including construction, mining and manufacturing.
Electricians can work in-house for large companies, within smaller operations, as external consultants or as self-employed tradespeople.
Some electricians may undergo further study to develop skills in electrical engineering, dual trade qualifications or specialisation.
Successful completion of this qualification allows students either to apply for an electrician’s licence through Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) or to apply for Open Cabler Registration licence endorsed by Australian Communications and Media Authority's (ACMA). Registration fees apply, payable to the licencing body.
Admissions
Students must be an apprentice under the Australian Apprenticeships Scheme (AAS), be employed in the electrical industry and be registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) prior to enrolment.

Completion of this qualification, with the appropriate elective units, can provide credit towards an Advanced Diploma in Engineering Technology – Electrical.
If your employer wants you to gain skills in instrumentation, you can enrol in either the Certificate IV in Electrical - Instrumentation or the Certificate IV in Instrumentation and Control.
You'll develop skills in instrumentation while meeting the Electrical Regulatory Authority Council's requirements to be a licensed electrician.

- 2021 government subsidised place: AU$2,000* per annum
- 2021 full-fee place: AU$6,500* per annum

Eligibility Exemption criteria
**The Victorian Government is currently waiving three (3) eligibility criteria around prior qualifications. This means that more people who want to study a vocational education program at RMIT, and who have studied previously, will be able to access a government subsidised place in a program. Payments and refunds

You may be entitled to apply for a fee concession or exemption if you are in a Victorian Government subsidised place and you meet the eligibility criteria.
If your application for a fee concession is approved, you will be charged 20% of the standard government subsidised tuition fee for your program. You will also be charged a lower rate on your student services and amenities fee (SSAF).
In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.
The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2021 is $313.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.
