Have you always wanted to work in fashion? Do you have a flair for the creative? Then this course will develop your skills.
Become a creative force in the global fasnion industry as a fashion stylist. You'll shape original imagery for brands, personalities and media channels.
You’ll work to simulated and real-world industry briefs and learn how to provide an individual or business with creative styling solutions for areas including fashion editorials for print or television advertising campaigns, style artists for music videos and concert performances and provide fashion image consultancy for personalities, models or other public figures.
In RMIT’s state-of-the-art studio spaces you will work with industry connected teachers and learn to successfully operate as an independent stylist or collaborate in teams to investigate potential scenarios where you will develop and create original styling solutions.
You will develop the following skills and knowledge to:
- Understand consumer behaviour
- Identity current local and global fashion design trends
- Develop Team leading skills
- Develop, communicate and sell your concept
- Develop networks with fashion industry
Work in style focussed social media online website and blogs, style merchandising, personal fashion styling, fashion retail or brand stylist, creative specialist and event management.

This course offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches to give you direct insights and experience in the global fashion workplace.
You will develop the practical skills and knowledge to perform the duties and tasks in a range of different job roles associated with Fashion Styling.
Classes are interactive and provide you with the opportunity to discuss ideas and practice new skills.
You will participate in the following class or workshop activities to:
- develop fashion editorials and fashion catalogues,
- create your own blog and social media sites,
- work on fashion styling photo-shoots for film or television,
- work in the photographic studio creating fashion images for fashion brands
- work at fashion events including a fashion parade.
You will learn and be assessed through:
- independent work
- group work
- on-line interaction.
Some assessment activities include case studies and formal presentations to groups, including fashion industry representatives.
You will be expected to attend 24 hours per week of classes and undertake approximately 8 hours of extra study and research weekly. There are often concentrated periods of self-directed study, research and out-of-class work when assessments are due.
Class sizes are approximately 21 students.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Work with a fashion stylist on an industry based project which may include meeting a target market or fashion brand styling brief.
- You will be involved in planning and running a fashion event or runway show.
- Work placement. You will gain on-the-job training with a fashion stylist or styling related company for a minimum of 60 hours.
In your studies you will participate in industry styling events and fashion styling opportunities including,
- trade and fashion shows
- guest speakers
- meet designers, fashion stylists, retailers and fashion magazine editors, either at RMIT events or during excursions.
RMIT Fashion and Textiles can provide you with global opportunities to study overseas through study tours to Asia, United States of American and European cities.
These activities involve additional expenses, and while overseas travel is not a requirement of the course, we encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities if you are able. Some financial support is available from the university to support overseas study experiences.

Graduates of the Diploma of Fashion styling have the capability to work in a range of jobs in the fashion and fashion styling industry including:
- personal stylist or image consultant

Admissions
You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school qualification).

Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post-secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
Entry requirements
You must complete and submit the Fashion Styling selection kit.
- VTAC applicants must register and submit the selection kit.

- Main round (All applicants): 30 November 2018
- All subsequent rounds (if places are available): 13 February 2019

The selection kit includes:
- an applicant statement outlining how you believe your current skills and capabilities and/or past experience will support you in this fashion styling program. You may include the different media you access to obtain your understanding of fashion trends and news (Maximum 250 words).
- folio: Your folio must comprise of 6 - 10 images of your work that expresses your interest in fashion styling and/or design interests. It should reflect your design, problem solving and research skills in some or all of the following:
- Fashion trends
- Design
- Presenting ideas and concepts through images
- Creative use of colour Your folio should include evidence of how ideas were developed as well as finished work.
Please include work that shows how you document your ideas and creative thinking and any work that demonstrates your potential to follow a design process.
You can include work from secondary school, previous study and personal or work-related design experience.
The work can come from a variety of discipline areas (e.g. fashion pieces, design, wearable art, illustrations, accessories, photography) and/or digital profiles (e.g. social media - Instagram, Pinterest, blogger follows (or the like) pages).
You are encouraged to include evidence of how your own ideas are developed and include final outcomes or personal interpretations of your exploration.
Your folio should be a single PDF (maximum size 10MB). Under each image, please provide a brief explanation, including the purpose and background of the work (maximum 50 words).

To study this program you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:
- IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 5.5 (with no individual band below 5.0)
- TOEFL (Paper Based Test): minimum score of 530 (TWE 3.5)
- TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 50 (with minimum of 5 in Reading, 5 in Listening, 14 in Speaking and 15 in Writing)
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 42 (with no communication band less than 36)
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 162 with no less than 154 in any component.

Pathways
Graduates of the Diploma of Fashion Styling can continue their studies with RMIT and may be eligible for advanced standing in the following programs,
- Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Technology
- Associate Degree in Fashion Merchandising
- Bachelor of Fashion (Design) (Honours)
RMIT students may also be eligible for credit into other RMIT programs.
When you successfully complete the Diploma of Fashion Styling, you are guaranteed entry into the following programs:
- Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Technology
- Associate Degree in Fashion and Textile Merchandising
Alternatively, you may be eligible for entry to other RMIT vocational study or undergraduate programs.

The tuition fees you will pay for this program will depend on whether you are offered a Victorian Government subsidised place or a full-fee place.

Eligibility criteria waver
**The Victorian Government is currently waiving two (2) eligibility criteria around prior qualifications. This means that more people who want to study a vocational education program at RMIT, and already have a qualification, will be able to access a government subsidised place in a program. In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.
The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2019 is $303.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.
The annual tuition fee for 2019 is AU$17,750.

In addition to tuition fees you also need to pay for:
