This qualification suits people who are seeking to work or currently working in the solar industry for the purposes of installing solar PV or solar hot water systems.

Over a two-day learning period, the Working Safely in the Solar Industry skill set is designed to enhance your practical skills and capabilities to seek work in the solar industry with the installation of photovoltaic and solar water systems.

This skill set provides a pathway to further qualifications. It is not intended as a replacement for full certificate-level qualifications.

Please note: this course is not available for international students intending to study on a student visa. Details

The Working Safely in the Solar Industry skill set is designed to ensure you have the appropriate skills and knowledge required to work safely in the solar industry.

Upon completion of your studies in this skill set, you will have the skills and knowledge to:

  • work safely on roofs
  • work safely at heights
  • identify and report asbestos.

The course Work Safey in the Solar Industry is delivered over 2 days, including 2 hours of compulsory practical on-campus assessment.  

Students must attend both days.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this degree and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

To complete this qualification, you will need to undertake and pass five units of competency. These are:

  • VU22744 Work Safely in the Solar Industry

Learners are required to hold a Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency and apply for Credit Transfer:

  • CPCCWHS2001 Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry or the equivalent unit of competency
  • CPCCCM2010B Work safely at heights - must have been attained within 6 years to be current if learner intends on applying for accreditation for grid-connect install or SPS install as per accreditation requirements of Clean Energy Council
  • CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid - must have been attained within 3 years to be current.

Recommended for electricians, plumbers, building practitioners, trades assistants and apprentices across industries who install solar panel/water collectors.

Admissions

Applicants must demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). This can be demonstrated via a personal statement, or 3-6 months of work experience.

Free TAFE Short Courses

As part of the Free TAFE initiative, the Victorian Government is currently waiving course fees for select short courses. Students who are assessed as eligible for a Government subsidised place will not be charged a tuition fee.

The student tuition fees as displayed by the fee finder are indicative only and subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.

Payments and refunds

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2024 is $351.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.

You may be entitled to apply for a fee concession or exemption if you are in a Victorian Government subsidised place and you meet the eligibility criteria.

If your application for a fee concession is approved, you will be charged 20% of the standard government subsidised tuition fee for your program. You will also be charged a lower rate on your student services and amenities fee (SSAF).
