Hayden Broomhall enjoys getting out of his comfort zone and observing the world from a different point of view.
Bachelor of Science (Dean’s Scholars) (Honours)
I’ve gained an understanding of how research takes place in a professional environment and I now have the confidence to take the lead in group projects.
I chose to study science as it’s a great way to see the world from a different perspective.
A highlight of my studies has been the opportunity to contribute to real research and work with respected scientists from a range of fields. I’ve gained an understanding of how research takes place in a professional environment and I now have the confidence to take the lead in group projects.
As part of a mentoring project I worked with two academics and joined research teams to actively assist in different procedures at a postgraduate level. This experience has given me a feel for how scientists operate in the real world and I’ve gained some valuable industry contacts.
My favourite subject has been Directed Study (ONPS1664) as it has taken me out of my comfort zone and I’ve learned some entirely new concepts.
When you study the Dean Scholar’s program, you are well supported by a friendly team of highly skilled academics. My advice to anyone interested would be to take every opportunity and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you are having trouble.
Within the next three years I plan to finish my degree (with honours) and start working towards a doctorate. I’m also considering an overseas tenure. I hope that eventually my qualifications will enable me to find a research position at the CSIRO.
I am dedicated, flexible and enthusiastic and I love what I do because it provides a unique perspective on the world around me.
