Diploma of Laboratory Technology (Biotechnology)
Many of my teachers were past students who had studied the same course and worked in laboratory institutes, so were able to share their experiences and provide guidance on how to achieve our goals.
Science has always been a field I am interested in. With the ATAR I had after year 12, I didn’t know which University to go to, I was lost.
My sister had studied at RMIT and she gave me some insights on what it was like so I decided to study here.
Biotechnology is a laboratory and research based study. I chose to study the Diploma of Laboratory Technology (Biotechnology) and enjoyed every part of the course, what was taught, what we were trained to do.
I found it really interesting and I was surrounded with inspiring mentors and teachers. Many of my teachers were past students who had studied the same course and worked in laboratory institutes, so they were able to share their experiences and provide guidance on how to achieve our goals.
As well as theory, we did lots of laboratory practicals to learn techniques used in industry. The practicals came in really useful when we did our work placements, allowing us to practice what we’d been taught.
My advice to other students would be to write up your practical reports as soon as you leave the laboratory, while they are still fresh in your mind.
I’m now studying the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) and found all the report writing I had to do for the diploma really helpful in building my skills and science vocabulary.
The Diploma of Laboratory Technology (Biotechnology) has helped me to get into the degree that I aimed for. When I finish I hope that I could be a part of a team in a research field, and be able to gain, retain, and generate new knowledge.
