STUDENT
Carol Nhan
Carol Nhan has combined her two loves of science and food to come to RMIT and study the Bachelor of Science (Food Technology and Nutrition).
Bachelor of Science (Food Technology and Nutrition)
One of my favourite subjects is Product Development, where you use your acquired skills to either upgrade or improve an existing product in the market or develop a new and creative food product.
Science has always been one of my all-time favourite subjects. It seems to trigger that part of the brain that drives me to discover more.
To be able to combine my interest in science with food, well, what more can I say!
RMIT has a great reputation for science and it was their Open Day which really helped me to make my decision. I think it’s a great place to study, learn and experience university life at its best.
The Food Technology and Nutrition program at RMIT covers nutrition, chemistry, microbiology, technology, quality assurance, sensory and legislation via a combination of classes in the lecture theatre and in the lab. There are also demonstrations, guest speakers and field trips that really help to build a strong foundation for a budding food technologist or nutritionist.
The program has helped me to understand how applications, materials and processing can affect the nutritional aspects of food. I’ve gained many skills that will prepare me for the workplace and I’ve really enjoyed expanding my food and nutrition knowledge while working with likeminded people from different backgrounds.
One of my favourite subjects is Product Development, where you use your acquired skills to either upgrade or improve an existing product in the market or develop a new and creative food product (which is safe for public consumption).
This fun subject gives you a sneak preview of what a typical product development team needs to consider in the food industry - i.e. the costs, paper work, legislation and production as well as sensory perception.
Ideally, I’d like to work for an Australian food company where I can use my skills to develop new products.
I am hard-working, an out-of-the-box thinker and creative.
I love what I do because it is challenging and it brings out the best in me.
