A passion for sport and fitness and a desire to work with athletes to improve their performance motivated Jake Cowin to study exercise and sports science.
Bachelor of Applied Science (Exercise and Sports Science)
I've always been passionate about sport and fitness and wanted to work with athletes to improve their performance. I chose RMIT because of the elite facilities and technology available to students and the hands-on learning provided.

As part of the program, I completed an internship at Northern Knights Football Club. I was involved in developing U18 AFL draft prospects and assisted in fitness testing sessions with AFL Victoria. The internship gave me exposure to working with high-level athletes as well as developing athletic potential to elite standards.
The program teaches you how to use technology in sport but also how to apply it and implement scientifically supported methods to improve athlete performance. I’ve gained skills in performance analysis, strength and conditioning, sports medicine and athlete management as well as developing confidence, leadership and communication skills.
My favourite subject has been Biomechanics - using 3D models of athletes we assess movements and determine methods to correct any poor patterns.
I currently work as a fitness advisor for the Northern Knights and am responsible for management of U16 and U18 recovery sessions, strength and conditioning, fitness testing and rehabilitation. I’m really proud of designing and developing a fatigue testing protocol for the players that resulted in a 57% reduction in hamstring and groin injuries.
I love what I do because I have the opportunity to make positive changes in the lives of others, giving them the knowledge to reach their maximum potential.
