RMIT is pleased to offer this Implant Overdenture accredited course that will provide you with the skills, knowledge and performance required to construct and insert an aesthetic and functional implant retained over dentureand increase your scope of practice. All procedures are carried out in accordance with work health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australia and NZ Standards, State/Territory legislative requirements and organisation policy.

Course content

  • Advantages and disadvantages of an implant retained overdenture
  • Work health and safety (WHS) procedures and Infection control guidelines
  • Planning and placement parameters (treatment planning, charts, records, PPE, required lab work and selection of instruments)
  • Prosthetic considerations (take a primary impression)
  • Bars, balls or locators (attachment and bar extension options)
  • Indications and contra-indications
  • Complications (problem solving)
  • Client pre and post-operative instructions
  • Practical activities to reinforce knowledge

    Participants must hold an Advanced Diploma of Dental Prosthetists.

    Materials supplied

    Denture teeth and models will be provided for participants to construct FL dentures that will be utilised in the course, and all implant components.

    Materials to bring

    Participants need to bring safety glasses, laboratory coat, process tools and a willingness to participate, apply your understanding and complete the assessment activities.

    Suited to

    The course is designed for:

    • Qualified Dental prosthetists with existing registration who are looking at extending their scope of practice and treat patients in need of implant overdentures,
    • Dental prosthetists that obtained their qualifications prior to 2006 and have not had formal training to extend their scope of practice to be able to treat patients in need of implant overdentures,
    • Dentists seeking 24 CPD hours.

    Once you have registered and paid for your course through the RMIT Short Courses website, there will be an additional enrolment step. This is because you will be studying a nationally endorsed unit of competency. You will be contacted shortly by our Academic Services team regarding the next step for online enrolment into an accredited unit.

    Unique Student Identifier

    All learners undertaking nationally recognised training are required to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) issued by the Australian Government.

    If you do not have a USI you will need to go and create one.


    To provide the general practitioner with the fundamentals, knowledge and practical skills required to construct and place an aesthetic and functional implant retained overdenture. Participants should be able to understand and competently apply the techniques of implant over denture treatment planning, restorative protocols and practical skills for adding this treatment to their scope of practice and treating patients.
