Want to experience the full process of making a documentary for film or television? This 6 week course will show you how from beginning to end.Explore the range of documentary forms, then work through how to create a documentary, starting with treatment, pre-production planning. In production, explore camera fundamentals, composition, framing, lighting, location sound production roles as a class. Finally, you will individually edit the class work using the industry standard Premiere Pro on Mac (or Final Cut Pro on request) in post-production.

  • Pre-production; Production methods
  • Hands-on training in equipment, technology and techniques
  • Tripod use; Lens, aperture, filters
  • Composition and framing
  • Coverage, continuity, shot selection
  • Introduction to lighting and field lighting; Location sound techniques
  • Postproduction; Non-linear editing; Adobe Premiere
  • Relationship between sound and picture; Finishing sound and picture

Materials required for the course will be provided. All relevant course notes are supplied with comprehensive instructions and exercises.

Suited to

This course is ideal for beginners, for people who wish to upgrade their documentary video production skills and for media professionals wishing to expand into the film and television field. You will work in teams on a class project and experience working in a variety of crewing positions. You will then individually edit your documentary and export your final movie to take away with you.

Completion of this course will not guarantee entry into an RMIT Program..


Upon finishing the course you will receive a RMIT Certificate of Completion. You can use this as a record to demonstrate the outcomes covered in the course.
