Is it time to bring out the writer in you? In this condensed weekend course, explore a range of fiction writing styles, with the emphasis on the development of a short story and novel writing. Develop and apply fiction writing skills of construction and criticism, and examine the fundamentals of story writing across a broad range of genres and styes.

  • Purpose; plot; characterisation
  • Dialogue; point of view; setting
  • Style; constructing narrative; genres
  • ‘Show Don’t Tell’
  • Developing your own style
  • Developing a viable project
  • Participants will be given the opportunity to write in a constructive environment.

As writing talent is not necessarily bound to education experience, there is no formal qualification required by this course, only a genuine interest in taking your fiction writing to the next level.

Materials supplied

Materials required for the course will be provided. All relevant course notes are supplied with comprehensive instructions and exercises.

Pen, paper and/or laptop for note taking.

This course is designed to meet the needs of two groups: those who have little practical experience but are drawn to the idea of writing fiction and would like to better understand the essential principles of story, and those who already have a novel, short story, screenplay or other form of fiction writing under way and want to underpin their current writing with theory and skills.

This course will teach the essential principles of writing a story and enable you to write short pieces of fiction as specified. You will learn to constructively analyse and criticise original fiction writing.You will have the opportunity to share your writing with a committed group who will provide valuable guidance and feedback.

Upon finishing the course you will receive a RMIT Certificate of Completion. You can use this as a record to demonstrate the outcomes covered in the course.
