Improve your camera skills, understanding of composition, lighting and design, shooting techniques, decision-making and post production (using Adobe Lightroom) with the next level of our Introduction to Photography course. This course will motivate you to push your skills and understanding further, giving you the confidence to produce even better images in a fun, relaxed environment.

Course content

  • Mastering the basic techniques - exposure control, depth of field and subject movement, composition, design and lighting
  • Practical shooting exercises to reinforce skills
  • Shooting with purpose
  • Choosing the best camera settings
  • Defining and refining your style
  • A taste of different genres, including portraiture, action, events, street, travel• Seeing Light, low light, high contrast light
  • Using Flash, on and off camera
  • Introduction to Lightroom - Library and Develop modules
  • Feedback and evaluation.

Introduction to Photography — Level 1 short course or equivalent experience. Must have a basic understanding of ISO, aperture and shutter speed settings for this advanced course.

Materials supplied

Materials required for the course will be provided. All relevant course notes are supplied with comprehensive instructions and exercises.

Materials to bring

DSLR or mirrorless camera. Pen, paper and/or laptop for note taking. A USB flash drive for transferring and storing files. A4 Display Folder.

Suited to

Photography enthusiasts who understand the basics of camera operation and want to further improve their technique. Also suitable for individuals who wish to develop a portfolio. Ideal follow on course for those who have completed the short course: Introduction to Photography — Level 1 or equivalent.

Additional notes

Deborah is a qualified professional photographer with a successful photography business in Qld. (Wild Honey Photography). She loves sharing her knowledge of photography with others and has a knack for explaining the complex in easy to understand ways.As well as teaching at RMIT, Deborah runs Photography Travel Tours and regularly exhibits her fine art photography, with images in both public and private collections.


This course will provide the opportunity to enhance all round knowledge of photography, to improve on skills and technique and to further develop personal style. It will promote greater confidence with camera operation and provide a solid understanding of how to use photography equipment to get the ideal shots.
