Build on the skills introduced in the Website Design - Level 1 course, and stay abreast of the most current methods and techniques in web design. You'll learn code in greater depth and gain the skills and techniques needed to design and develop web pages from scratch. Discover how to use tools to streamline the development process, and master cutting-edge responsive page layout techniques including Flexbox and CSS Grid.

Course content

  • Web design techniques - design concepts, wireframes, mockups; About HTML5 structural markup, and how to use it
  • Ensuring content fits and flows on any screen; Building a responsive column grid; Working with media queries
  • Designing great looking navigation; Layout techniques - Floats, Positioning, Flexbox and CSS Grid
  • Complex responsive layouts with Grid; Ensuring compatibility with older browsers
  • Strategies for good typography - spacing, scalability; Using web fonts and icons
  • Scalable background images, gradient backgrounds; Forms - building and designing
  • Incorporating jQuery for interactivity, and using plugins - smooth scrolling, parallax etc.
  • CSS Animation - from simple to more complex animations
  • Interactive UI elements - overlays, mobile ‘hamburger’ menus, dropdown menus
  • CSS preprocessing - working with SASS - variables, nesting and mixins

Basic HTML and CSS coding skills are required for this intermediate course, as introduced in Website Design — Level 1. You should be able to edit code with some confidence and have a working knowledge of website structure and navigation.

Materials supplied

Project files required for the course will be provided. All relevant course notes are supplied with comprehensive instructions and exercises.

Materials to bring

Pen, paper and/or laptop for note taking. A USB flash drive for transferring and storing project files to take away with you each week.

Suited to

This course is aimed at people who already have some experience with writing HTML and CSS, as taught in the ‘Website Design — Level 1' course. If you are unsure about your current skill level, let us know, we can put you in touch with the course facilitator, who will be able to advise on which course is best for you.

Modern web design has become complex. Grid, Flexbox, HTML5 and other current methods are extremely powerful, but understanding how they work can be a challenge. Students will gain in-depth knowlege of concepts and the practical applications of these techniques, building solid skills based on real-world examples. As student move through the course, they will build a library of modules and templates that you can use to build your own web design projects.

Paul Greenstein is an experienced trainer with more than two decades working as a web designer and developer on a wide range of online projects, from websites to email template coding, email marketing, animation and corporate video. Paul provides consultancy, development and training services to a wide range of customers.
