Learn the fundamentals of motion graphics in After Effects with this short course now delivered online, working with video, type, vector and raster assets for digital video and interactive media.

Perfect for those looking to bring a bit of life to their work. In this course, now being delivered online, you will work through a combination of live, group tutorials and one-on-one online chats with your mentor, to hone in on exactly what you want to get out of this course.

  • An introduction to After Effects interface and basic tools
  • Production pipelines and file management
  • Importing different types of file – vector, raster, video and audio
  • Animation tools and principles
  • Working with shapes and typography
  • Practical use of masks and track mattes
  • Creative use of key effects and plugins
  • Working in 2.5D
  • Editing composites and colour grading
  • Outputting and rendering projects

Prerequisites

It is advised that you have prior basic to intermediate knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, though it is not required for success in this course.

Materials supplied

All relevant course materials will be provided online.

Materials to bring

A computer with a current version of Adobe After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop installed. Please advise mcshortcourseadmin@rmit.edu.au if you do not have your own license.

Pen, paper and/or laptop for note taking. A USB flash drive for transferring and storing files.

It is highly recommended that you have a 2nd monitor/screen to get the maximum benefit from this course.

Professionals looking to develop basic to intermediate skills in motion graphics and digital imaging using Adobe After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop. Particularly focused on creating small scale content for online outputs like social media.

Please join the first session with ideas about the types of things you would like to learn.

This could be examples of videos found online, creators you follow, a cool clip you saw in a movie... Anything at all that has inspired you to begin learning Motion Graphics.

Outcome

By the end of this course, you will have a sound understanding of the basic tools of Adobe After Effects for making engaging digital content, and an industry-based production pipeline for further learning and development.

You will also leave this course with a completed motion graphics project of your very own, along with the many, small, in class projects completed together.

Facilitator: Alyssa Smedley

Alyssa Smedley is an animator, illustrator and co-director of a young production company Pirate Size Productions. Working predominantly in the fields of 2D animation with an enthusiasm for character design and motion graphics, Alyssa also teaches into the field at both RMIT and Swinburne.

Alyssa leads design with the Pirate Size crew on many new and original projects focused towards kids and families. They are currently in development on a co-production with Starburns Industries on an animated series called Log. These projects can be viewed on Alyssa's website.
