Between the Fog examines the disembodied ways we engage with and extract meaning from cultural phenomena. Exploring dynamic and nonsensical relationships between symbols, materials and creative desire, this exhibition invites the viewer to contemplate new, alternative interpretations. The works were created through a process influenced by the ways we engage with media; by taking a symbol or image away from its origins and recontextualising it within a web of other abstracted symbols. Fragmented components of objects removed from their original context become entwined and re-defined within a web of other floating signifiers, exposing that there is no inherent meaning in the objects. Objects flowing between distinct and collective forms reveal latent meanings that are autonomous from the artist’s intentions. Together the works offer an alternative way of engaging with the oppressive regimes of images that flood the everyday. They offer a more expansive and interconnected way of meaning-making that moves and shifts, rather than favouring reductive understandings that stagnate.
