Course Description

The aim of this course is to provide you with knowledge, key concepts, and practices relating to the management of people in organisational settings from diverse perspectives. Students will be guided to develop their skills in critical thinking, analytical report writing, communication, and active participation in discussions about current issues relating to managing people.

Topics pertaining to managing people through a competing values framework link issues such as creating and sustaining commitment and cohesion, communication, establishing and maintaining stability and continuity, improving productivity and increasing profitability, promoting change and encouraging adaptability, and mastery of managing people.

Through a critical thinking and diversity approach this course prepares future managers to demonstrate a heightened self-awareness of individual and group competencies required to manage people effectively. Students will acquire a body of knowledge reflecting quality academic research in a business report. Through self-analysis they will develop a plan for continuous self-mastery.

On the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

CLO1 | Analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories from a body of knowledge that includes recent developments in the field of managing people.

CLO2 | Research and apply established theories that integrates multiple perspectives and supports effective management of people principles that are contextually-appropriate.

CLO3 | Design an evidence-based managerial strategy that effectively accounts for the culturally diverse needs of managing people in global business environments.

CLO4 | Demonstrate a high level of personal autonomy and accountability, authoritative judgement and responsibility in your professional practice.


Overview of Learning Activities

The Managing People course has been designed to integrate theories, frameworks and concepts with practical skills to build your competencies when managing people effectively through an active-learning approach. To successfully complete this course you will need to participate in lectures, tutorials and other learning events. Regular learning tasks may involve online activities, reading broadly, analysing a range of resources, researching and reporting critically on set topics, and completing prescribed assessment tasks.

You are required to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, having a critical inquiry approach and seeking information from a range of people, services, and resources as required. Numerous resources are available through the RMIT Library. Links and materials specific to this course are available through myRMIT Studies/Canvas Course site. You will also be required to actively and effectively engage with peers in collaborative problem solving activities and other forms of group work.

The myRMIT Studies/Canvas site for this course Management 1 - Managing People contains learning resources, including the weekly lecture slides, directed readings, and other relevant materials. You will also find announcements, and information about the course, especially in relation to the assessment tasks. You will be provided with an initial set of readings on the site but you are expected to undertake significant independent research. You are encouraged to broaden your knowledge of course topics by reading widely, including academic journals and online information available through professional associations related to our course.
