Course Description

Architecture design electives draw on key areas of Architecture History and Theory, Communications, Technology, and Design, and from interdisciplinary design projects offered across the School of Architecture and Design programs.

The elective offerings cover areas of design, technology, history and theory exposing you to a variety of areas. You will reflect on your existing skill level and then select and apply for available options in order to apply, develop and improve your skills in specific areas.

A balloting process, where you nominate preferences from the range of elective course offerings is used to assign you particular classes. This course enrolment provides an option for fulfilling the requirements for a 12 credit point Architecture Design Elective. Refer to specific Architecture Design Elective posters for information pertaining to the content of specific elective courses.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Research and examine a large range of local and international architectural works, cultural movements and ideas, their theoretical and cultural context and relevance to design in order to form a reasoned position and apply this through design
  • Professionally communicate, transmit and defend complex design ideas through verbal, visual and written media to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • Identify, critique and apply a comprehensive body of knowledge in relation to the legal, economic, social and political context of the practice of architecture and its regulation as a profession

Upon successful completion of this course you will:

  1. apply new conceptual, communication, technical and design skills to a key area of Architectural History and Theory, Communications, Technology, and/or Design
  2. apply design knowledge to solve a range of problems in one of these key areas
  3. critically analyse, evaluate and make informed judgement on an area of architectural problems and situations
  4. communicate complex design ideas through verbal, visual and written media
  5. reflect upon your learning achievements in design, to take responsibility for your future design direction and continued learning

Overview of Learning Activities

Architecture Design Electives primarily involve project-based teaching and learning in areas of study that seek to support and inform the core Design Studios through horizontal integration. Design Elective projects may include Architectural History + Theory, Communications or Technology Projects offered within the Architecture Program, and interdisciplinary Design Projects offered across the School of Architecture and Design.
You will typically work in small groups with a primary tutor who sets and directs the study topics and project-based learning activities. The Architecture Elective projects that you may ballot for each semester within the Architecture Program and across the School of Architecture and Design are diverse. Refer to the particular Architecture Elective Posters for further details and descriptions offered each semester for further information. Learning activities are approached as an interactive, participatory process involving both teachers and students, where classes involve input from all participants.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT University will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. All architecture courses are held in timetabled studio and classroom spaces. RMIT University does not have dedicated studio spaces outside timetabled classes but we do have a range of project spaces where projects can be assembled and their resources productively arranged, available out of timetabled classes and studios (24/7). You will have access to many specialist facilities including: advanced CAD laboratories, Construction Technology workshops, Digital Design and Manufacturing Laboratories, Modelling Workshops, 3d scanners and printers, laser and foam cutters as well as various metal working, wood working, vacuum forming equipment and CNC manufacturing machines.
In addition to these resources the University library has extensive resources for Architecture students. The library has produced a subject guide that includes quality online and print resources for your studies. Refer: http://rmit.libguides.com/architecture. The library provides guides on academic referencing http://www.rmit.edu.au/LIBRARY/referencing  and subject specialist help via your Liaison Librarian Gwen Scott gwen.scott@rmit.edu.au.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Throughout the semester you will receive ongoing feedback on your progress, with written feedback at mid semester.

Digital Portfolio (100%) (CLOs 1,2,3,4,5)

The portfolio is a record of the work done during the elective which may contain research, design development, text along with a reflection by you on the work. This reflection can be done through annotation of images or short descriptions.

The final grade is based on holistic assessment of how well you meet all the course learning outcomes.

The weighting of this assessment task has been approved by the Pro-Vice Chancellor Learning and Teaching DSC.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.

Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies and procedures: http://www1.rmit.edu.au/policies/assessment-policy
