Course Description

The course aims to assist you to develop an understanding of contemporary issues in the management of information systems (IS) and information technology (IT.) You will develop a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts and issues involved in developing and managing the function of an information systems organizational unit with reference to: business value of IT; strategic IT; IT and business goals; IT as a change agent; IT infrastructure and communications; business process re-engineering; managing systems development; managing operations; end-user computing; project management; outsourcing; change management; IT education and certification; professional development; accountability and, social and ethical issues. Particular attention is paid to adopting an evidence-based practice approach as well as professional ethics when seeking solutions to problems in these areas.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Appraise and apply evidence practice (EBP) to formulate effective solutions to deal with contemporary performance problems and issues associated with the delivery of business information systems.
  2. Create a consultant report that evaluates business systems operations and problems and offers effective recommendations aimed at enhancing business outcomes.
  3. Synthesize from a range of sources dealing with best practice a planning and evaluation framework that can be consistently applied to management problems in business information systems.
  4. Evaluate the importance and implementation of learning theory to construct and apply practices that facilitate aspects of personal and institutional change.
  5. Demonstrate competence in oral, written, and visual communication in business reports and presentations


Overview of Learning Activities

You are expected to undertake extensive reading (text, WWW and current events) and to relate the theory and issues being studied to your own work experiences, class case studies and related scenarios. Lectures offer an overview of the conceptual material covered in the course. Particular attention is paid to consideration of evidence-based practice when managing computing resources. Class presentations by students are used to develop personal effectiveness in sharing knowledge. Extensive use of video feedback is employed to have you hone your presentation skills and to improve the persuasiveness of your arguments. There is an emphasis placed on solving problems, interpreting issues and assessing their impact on your current or potential work environments.

You will need to make extensive use of the WWW and RMIT Library’s rich range of journal collections. An ISYS1015 site mounted using Blackboard in RMIT’s online learning system supports this course. You access a range of learning resources and tools through your myRMIT studies account in the RMIT online network.
Various learning resources are available online through myRMIT Studies\Blackboard. In addition to topic notes; assessment details and a study schedule you may also be provided with links to relevant online information; readings; audio and video clips and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers and to share information.
