Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You are expected to have successfully completed the following courses
     MATH2160 Engineering Mathematics A,
     MATH2161 Mathematics for ECE,
     EEET2248 Engineering Methods, and
     EEET2249 Circuit Theory
or you are familiar with foundations of engineering mathematics and circuit theory. Prior knowledge of Matlab and SPICE is necessary.

Course Description

This course develops skills required for appropriate modelling and simulation of electronic circuits and systems. Numerical methods, device modelling, advanced simulation of analogue circuit, and simulation of digital systems are at the core of this course. The course puts a focus on research and will be of project based nature.

Major topic areas are:

  • Numerical methods
  • Parametric, Temperature and Performance analyses
  • Statistical analyses: Monte Carlo, Sensitivity, Worst Case
  • Analogue and Digital Simulation

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course develops the following Program Learning Outcomes of the Master of Engineering:

  • High levels of technical competence in the field
  • Development of independent research skills in electronic circuits and systems
  • Be able to apply problem solving approaches to work challenges and make decisions using sound engineering methodologies

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Apply numerical methods to circuit and system simulation
  2. Apply advanced considerations in circuit and system simulation
  3. Design and implementation of simulation setup
  4. Interpret, extract, analyse and present simulation result

Overview of Learning Activities

You are expected to actively participate in pre-recorded lectures, and attend practical laboratories /simulation experiments, assignments and multiple research project works.

Lectures in this course tend to deliver basic information and examples of different nature for different applications. Labs will deliver a guided ground for students to review and implement examples. Laboratory will be conducted throughout the semester.

There will be one design assignment and one design project covering different aspects of the course. Main topics will be identified by the lecturer. Marking criteria will be discussed in the lectures.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
