Course Description

This course introduces the technologies used to manage information in today’s digital environment and provides you with the practical skills required to work effectively as information professional. You will use a range of tools and technologies to create, describe, record, store and exchange information, and to communicate effectively with other people. You will learn about the systems and processes underpinning information management, including current and future developments in digitisation of documents, information architecture and storage, networking, and the World Wide Web.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the relationships between information technology and architecture and the structure, design and flows of information.
  2. Analyse, reflect and evaluate the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to manage personal and organisational information needs.
  3. Evaluate, select and use appropriate web tools for creating, organising, storing, sharing and working with information.
  4. Apply suitable metadata standards such as Dublin Core and AGLS to improve the visibility and accessibility of information over the Internet.
  5. Use initiative, creativity and persistence to solve web-based information problems using information and communications technologies.


Overview of Learning Activities

Key concepts and skills and their application will be explained and illustrated in lectures, seminars and online notes with opportunities to discuss their use in case studies during tutorials and group discussions (including online forums). Practical activities in class and online will allow you to develop your technical skills and deepen your understanding of the concepts.
There will be opportunities to hear guest speakers and audio/video recordings of lectures and presentations will be available where feasible.
Online students will have access to comprehensive course materials through RMIT’s online learning systems.
