Course Description

COMM1218 Electronic Publishing aims to provide you with an opportunity to develop an understanding and appreciation of electronic publishing. The course explores the business models of commercial electronic publishers and how these impact on the management of, and access to, such digitally published content. A range of digital content issues will be examined during the early weeks of the course. We will then explore issues of design and writing for the presentation of digital content and later in the course, you will place this into context through a digital design/publishing exercise.

You will gain or improve capabilities in the following areas:

 

  • Information Literacy- You will develop information seeking skills as you track and evaluate changing trends in electronic content development
  • Information Technology Practice - You will explore new technology that is associated with the delivery of electronically published content
  • Professional Practice - You will explore the impact of changing technology has on online content development, traditional and electronic publishing and information access
  • Interpersonal and Communication Practice - You will continue to develop group communication skills, especially in relation to the design of a group publication project
  • Management Practice - Negotiation and project planning skills be developed


 At the completion of this course you should be able to:
 

  • Identify important trends in electronic publishing
  • Describe typical workflow used in the creation of electronic publications
  • Describe and use information services enabled by the Internet and appraise their implications for the publishing industry
  • Appreciate the issues involved in packaging information for electronic publication, and, in particular, designing content for on-screen reading
  • Design and implement basic electronic publications
  • Use the Internet both as a source of information and as a means of publishing information


Overview of Learning Activities

A range of learning activities are offered for this course including access to online lecture material and activities. You will participate in a group discussion either face to face or through the online discussion and communication tools. Activities are designed to explore issues of electronic publishing. Your active and constructive participation in group discussions is expected in addition to weekly reading and careful planning of assessment tasks.


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be expected to use the library’s electronic resources to engage in professional reading relevant to the topics and issues being addressed in the course. Course materials, including lectures slides and activities, are available online via myRMIT.


Overview of Assessment

Assessments in the course are designed for you to explore issues relating to electronic publishing and to deliver information is a suitable format for screen based reading. Assessment types may include assignments, publishing projects, tutorial problems and reflective analysis.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
