Course Description

This course aims to provide you with an opportunity to reflect on, and gain insight into, the role and function of  teaching and learning in applied clinical situations. Educational strategies and principles that enhance positive outcomes for clients, families, students, peers and health professionals will be identified, reflected on and practised with the a focus on adult learning principles. Emphasis is placed on your use of course content to set your own objectives to enhance your role as a clinical teachers within the context that is meaningful for your practice. You will consider curriculum development and development of a teaching plan along with styles of teaching. Within the course, peer review, competencies, mentorship and preceptorship are explored as useful strategies to support, evaluate and assess teaching and learning in the clinical situation.

Course Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course you will be expected to:

  • reflect and analyse  personal experiences of clinical teaching
  • review a variety of learning and teaching models and theories as they relate to the education of health and illness
  • review and evaluate principles of adult teaching and learning as they apply to clinical practice
  • critically analyse the role of clinical teaching in health care
  • discuss the relevance and application of a variety of strategies for differing teaching situations in the health care setting
  • critically review the issues of evaluation and assessment for example peer review and competency.

This course is provided as an online learning activity in a flexible learning mode. Learning activities you will undertake during this course include a mixture on line learning packages, online discussion and self-directed learning exercises including directed reading of academic literature to provide a solid theoretical basis.  


Overview of Learning Resources

The learning resources associated with this course will include targeted readings taken from a range of both primary and secondary sources. Material to be chosen may be digitally available to you. Material will be delivered via Lectopia, Discussion Board interaction and Blackboard Collaborate workshops as appropriate. RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through the online system


Overview of Assessment

Your assessments for this course will comprise formative and summative assessment to allow you to demonstrate your knowledge of the course content and will include written work and critical analysis of health based teaching practices.

Assessment completed in the first half of the semester will provide feedback on your progress. Ongoing feedback on your skills will be provided from peers and staff.
