Course Description

In this course you will explore contemporary nursing practice in the context of primary and community health. You will develop an understanding of the influence of culture on health beliefs and practices in different cultures. The importance of transcultural nursing, cultural competent care, cultural assessment, and communicating effectively with clients and families who come from a different cultural and linguistic backgrounds will be explored in this unit. Opportunity will also be provided for you to select one particular culture for specific study of health patterns and health care practices. You will investigate the social determinants of health from a global, national and local perspective. You will be encouraged to explore primary and community health interventions for socially excluded, vulnerable and at-risk populations. You will be introduced to key concepts and frameworks of nursing care within a primary care context.

You may have the option to take mobility experiences or internships as part of this course.

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify and describe models of primary and community nursing practice;
  2. Elaborate and critique the theory of the social determinants of health;
  3. Develop resources and skill to understand multicultural health care needs in assessment and intervention;
  4. Explain how the social determinants of health might influence nursing practice in global, national and local contexts;
  5. Explore principles of primary care epidemiology and contemporary challenges in primary health care including women health, refugee health and disaster management;
  6. Analyse the concepts of health promotion and education that guide nurses in primary care practice and activity.

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
