It is recommended that you successfully complete Photographic Lighting 1 prior to undertaking this course. 


Course Description

This course explores the concepts and principles of photographic lighting and ways in which to develop a more comprehensive approach to using light in a photographic practice. The course focusses on planning, pre-production, research and problem-solving and their significance in the realisation of more complex photographic productions.

You will learn how to make effective decisions on the appropriateness of different lighting types, camera craft and related photographic practices.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes:

  • Utilize advanced photographic knowledge and technical skills to contribute to visual discourses in your chosen field of photography
  • Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge and specific skills in the discipline in which to base your professional practice or future study
  • Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in your practice or future study.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Apply theoretical and practical knowledge of the properties and qualities of light to the creation of photographic images.
  2. Experiment with various types of light (available & artificial) and lighting techniques to best express a diverse range of concepts and narratives within specific photographic projects. 
  3. Analyse and apply appropriate pre and post-production processes required to complete complex photographic tasks and projects.
  4. Analyse and apply appropriate camera craft and image capture techniques to a range of photographic projects.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will engage in a range of learning activities including workshops, seminars, tutorials, project group work and independent investigations.  Within the photographic studio environment, and beyond (location) you will engage with a range of practices and techniques to support your learning, including demonstrations by a range of leading practitioners in the field.

Delivery may be face to face, with a range of curated online resources to support class content and workshop materials.
