Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Some basic knowledge of electronics, mechanics and materials will be required.
Course Description
The convergence of the fields of electronics, software engineering and materials has created this new category of study that is transcending traditional knowledge boundaries. The overall goal of the developments in this field is usually to extend the capability or functionality of an existing engineering product.
The course is expected to comprise of a suite of specialist lectures on applied computing, electronics, micro-mechanical devices and materials. Then another suite of lectures on how these technologies can be integrated into an engineering entity, will follow. Finally, to capture the essence of this teaching module, a series of laboratory-based demonstration sessions will be held to ’make real’, aspects of the lectures given earlier.
The learning process will therefore comprise of formal lectures and laboratory-assignments. The three-hour final exam should also ensure thorough knowledge acquisition of his multi-disciplinary subject.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
General Educational Aims
• The appreciation of electro-mechanical devices and its applications.
• To understand the interdependencies of electronics, kinematics, computer control algorithms and advanced material technologies in Electro-Mechanical Systems.
• To practically demonstrate the above technologies with the design and manufacture of micro-devices.
Specific Educational Objectives
On completion, the student will be able to :
• approach manufacturing-related problems from a holistic perspective
• apply the knowledge of electronics, kinematics, computer control algorithms and advanced material technologies
Overview of Learning Activities
