Course Description
This course will consist of a supervised professional placement in a sub-acute healthcare setting. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 120 hours of supervised nursing practice the designated clinical setting under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Specific learning outcomes will be achieved over the period of the professional practice placement. Nursing care will be planned and implemented under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This course will consist of an introduction to the nurse’s role and expectations in planning and provision of care in the clinical setting, introduction to healthcare documentation and microbiological aspects of care. Students will build on numeracy skills that underpin the therapeutic administration of medications. Students will apply the theoretical concepts learned in the courses being studied in this and the previous semester. You will, under the supervision of a registered nurse, participate in delivering the day-to-day care required to support activities of daily living. Additionally, in a real life setting you will apply manual handling and microbiological principles to ensure safe care delivery. Students will also be given the opportunity to develop communication skills and will be introduced to healthcare documentation requirements. This will be undertaken in a sub-acute clinical setting.
Attendance at the designated facility for the entire 120 hours is a mandatory requirement. Successful completion of this course cannot be achieved until you have met this requirement. If you are deemed unsafe at any time during the WIL experience, or function beyond your scope of practice, you may be removed from the health care setting and receive a fail grade for this course. You will be required to re-enrol in the course in the following year.

At any time prior to or during your placement if there are concerns raised related to your fitness to practice the clinical coordinator can request that you gain full medical clearance to continue your placement.
You will be notified of specific placement details as early as possible via InPlace. The placement information is subject to change at any time up until placement, so please check your student e-mail account daily. Please note: You may have to travel up to 2 hours (one way) to attend the clinical venue allocated.
Work Integrated Learning:
Students enrolled in this course will be required to undertake placement as part of the assessment of the course. A number of requirements must be met by students to ensure eligibility for placement. Further details on each of these are available in Part B of the Course Guide and on Canvas.

- National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS worker) screening check
There is no flexibility with these requirements. It is your responsibility to ensure these requirements are completed. Any student who has not provided this information in full will not be able to attend placement and will receive a fail grade for the placement course. A fail grade for the course will result in a delay in your program progression.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Undertake culturally relevant and age specific nursing care under supervision of the registered nurse.
- Display beginning communication skills with patients and the nursing staff.
- Demonstrate safe practice in relation to Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Recognise the role of the nurse within the multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
- Identify and function at your level and scope of practice.
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively evaluate your nursing care against measurable outcomes.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.

Overview of Assessment
All assessments are required to be completed for a pass mark in this course. This clinical course awards a pass or fail mark.
This course contains hurdle requirements. All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).
Hurdle requirements are required in order to provide evidence of competency to the accrediting organisation the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC).
