Course Description

This course will introduce you to the exercise science field and generic skills required to pursue the study of physical education.

Particular emphasis is placed on topics relating to scientific methods and practice, research and measurement skills, and on providing you with the skills necessary to identify and locate appropriate sources of physical education information, and to present these in an appropriate format.

The concepts of data collection, validity, reliability, assessment and analyses will be developed. It will also provide you with an overview of quantitative and qualitative research methods, literature searching, research design, ethics, data analyses, reliability and validity, presentation of data in tables and figures, and the presentation of research in oral and written formats.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will contribute to the students development of a range of ACHPER Professional Competencies and Victorian Institute of Teachers Guidelines. These include:·

D26 Evaluating outcomes of the physical education program and modifying the program as required·

D27 Utilising a range of assessment strategies to progressively monitor student learning·

D28 Analysing performance of motor activities and providing constructive feedback in order to enhance performance·

D30 Effectively communicating information to students, teachers and parents about student achievement in physical education


At the conclusion of this course you should be able to:

1. Identify potential fields of employment within physical education;
2. Conduct a comprehensive search of the research literature on a chosen topic;
3. Discuss the strengths and weakness of research methodologies;
4. Undertake basic fitness assessments;
5. Effectively analyse data;
6. Interpret the findings from data analyses;
7. Clearly present a summary of the data and findings;
8. Describe the ethical issues associated with research;
9. Design a research study.


Overview of Learning Activities

In this course, you will attend lectures and tutorial laboratory classes in which the theory and practical components of the course will be integrated.

The practical component of the course is designed to build fundamental skills in data collection, analysis interpretation and presentation.

Learning resources in this course include text books, lecture notes, practical exercises and handouts or references on selected topics. Where possible this information is provided online via myRMIT and you will be expected to regularly access the course website, which contains announcements, course information such as detailed timetables and prescribed reading, and course documents.


Overview of Assessment

To pass this course, you must satisfactorily complete each assessment component and obtain an overall mark of 50% or more. Assessment will be designed to examine your understanding of content knowledge and may include written assessment, tutorial tasks, group work and a formal examination.
