Course Description

This course introduces you to key concepts in lean manufacturing such as continuous improvement, just-in-time production, “pull” philosophy and total quality management (TQM). The course then focuses on the methods and tools commonly used to analyse the existing state of a manufacturing environment, including value stream mapping, Kaizen cycle, single minute exchange of dies (SMED), six sigma and capability index. Illustrated with case studies and worked examples, the course will examine the socio-technical interactions within a modern manufacturing organisation and develop skills and processes for implementing changes for achieving agile manufacturing and global competitiveness. The objectives of this course are to enable you to design a globally competitive manufacturing organisation using lean manufacturing principles, and to develop the skills to implement lean manufacturing in industry and manage the change process to achieve continuous improvement of efficiency and productivity.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes:

1. Needs, Context and Systems
• Exposit legal, social, economic, ethical and environmental interests, values, requirements and expectations of key stakeholders
• Identify and assess risks (including OH&S) as well as the economic, social and environmental impacts of engineering activities

2. Problem Solving and Design
• Anticipate the consequences of intended action or inaction and understand how the consequences are managed collectively by your organisation, project or team
• Develop and operate within a hazard and risk framework appropriate to engineering activities

4. Professional Practice
• Demonstrate effective team membership and team leadership
• Communicate in a variety of different ways to collaborate with other people, including accurate listening, reading and comprehension, based on dialogue when appropriate, taking into account the knowledge, expectations, requirements, interests, terminology and language of the intended audience
• Demonstrate orderly management of self, and professional conduct.

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Identify key requirements and concepts in lean manufacturing
  2. Initiate a continuous improvement change program in a manufacturing organisation
  3. Apply the tools in lean manufacturing to analyse a manufacturing system and plan for its improvements
  4. Manage the manufacturing system to achieve six sigma quality and sustainability

Overview of Learning Activities

A combination of pre-recorded lectures, in-class discussions and project based individual and group work.

Overview of Learning Resources

You will be able to access course information and learning materials through the course Blackboard (accessed via myRMIT) and the RMIT Library, and will be provided with copies of additional materials in class or via email.
