Course Description
This unit provides you with the knowledge and skills to design safe and efficient methods of controlling traffic on the road and at the worksite, and to design and calculate the geometry of both rural and urban roads using relevant Australian road design standards.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):
1.1 Descriptive, formula-based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the practice area.
1.2 Procedural-level understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the practice area.
1.3 In depth practical knowledge and skills within specialist sub-disciplines of the practice area.
1.5 Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the practice area.
2.1 Application of established technical and practical methods to the solution of well-defined engineering problems.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Relate transport / traffic engineering theories to practical professional challenges of civil engineering.
2. Identify key human factors influencing road and intersection design.
3. Analyse speed parameters and sight distances involved in road and intersection design.
4. Apply traffic flow and queuing theories to actual road and transport situations.
5. Apply knowledge and skills of land surveying in road design.
6. Estimate earthworks and associated costs in a road project.
7. Design and calculate the horizontal and vertical alignment of a roadway centreline.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will participate in individual and team work related problem solving engineering activities. The learning will be fostered during classes, tutorials, test, homework, group assignments and examination to gain technical skills, develop broader perspectives within the engineering and professional skills.

Students will be able to access information and learning materials through CANVAS and may be provided with additional materials in class. List of relevant reference books, resources in the library and accessible Internet sites will be provided where possible. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts.
