Course Description
The purpose of this course is to provide you with the skills and knowledge required for the analysis and design of reinforced concrete members, including beams, one and two-way slabs, footings and columns.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):
1.1 Descriptive, formula-based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the practice area.
1.2 Procedural-level understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the practice area.
1.3 In depth practical knowledge and skills within specialist sub-disciplines of the practice area.
1.6 Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities
and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the area of practice.
2.1 Application of established technical and practical methods to the solution of well-defined engineering problems.
2.3 Application of systematic synthesis and design processes
to well defined engineering problems.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Analyse concrete properties and mix design.
2. Analyse and design singly and doubly reinforced concrete beams.
3. Analyse and design reinforced concrete T-beams and L-beams.
4. Analyse and design continuous beams and one-way slabs (single span and continuous).
5. Analyse and design two-way slabs supported by rigid beams and walls
6. Design short and slender columns
7. Proportion footings and design axially loaded footings
8. Calculate termination of reinforcement and layout reinforcement to satisfy Code requirements.
9. Evaluate the need to provide shear and torsion reinforcement.
Overview of Learning Activities
The learning activities may include:
• Lectures
• Tutorials
• Lab work
• Literature research online and library
• Project based learning
Overview of Learning Resources
Students will be able to access information and learning materials through myRMIT and may be provided with additional materials in class. List of relevant reference books, resources in the library and accessible Internet sites will be provided where possible. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts.
