Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.

Course Description

This course aims to develop the capabilities and advanced analytic skills required for fulfilling employment in a range of biomedical environments including research laboratories and the wider work place.  The course comprises a series of workshops and a practical project, which may be in a research or teaching laboratory at RMIT or another work place.   The work integrated learning (WIL) projects are run according to a timetable devised between you and your project supervisor. The aim is to provide practical experience in which you should learn essential skills for biomedical scientists.    This course provides you with a capstone experience, which will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program.    This course includes a internal or external work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience. Students who would prefer to work in other parts of the industry will be supported to seek a work placement and to develop a project on which you report.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes in

Biomedical Science (BP231):

  • Demonstrate a coherent understanding of Biomedical Science (PLO 1);
  • Critically analyse and solve scientific problems (PLO3);
  • Demonstrate effective communication of biomedical science (PLO 4)
  • Demonstrate accountability for your own learning and scientific work (PLO 5).

Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology)/ Biomedical Science (BP293):

  • Demonstrate a coherent understanding of biotechnology and biomedical sciences (PLO 1);
  • Critically analyse and solve scientific problems (PLO 3);
  • Demonstrate effective communication of biotechnology and biomedical science (PLO 4):
  • Demonstrate accountability for your own learning and scientific work (PLO 5)

Bachelor Pharmaceutical Sciences (BP311):

  • Exhibiting depth and breadth of scientific knowledge (PLO 1)
    Develop a broad and coherent body of knowledge particularly in biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology and toxicology
  • Critically analyse and solve scientific problems  (PLO 2)
    Adapt  knowledge, concepts and skills to problem solve.
  • Communication and Teamwork  (PLO 3)
    Develop skills to effectively communicate, both orally and written.
  • Investigation and Analysis  (PLO 4)
    Apply  initiative and judgement and adapt  knowledge and skills.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Present yourself in written form that showcases your qualifications and education, experience and skills;
  2. Prepare and present both written and oral reports in scientific language, including referencing specialist literature;
  3. Demonstrate evidence of searching, reading and critical reviewing of relevant literature;
  4. Gain experience, skills, knowledge and attributes of a biomedical scientist in the workplace. The learning activities will vary depending on your project and workplace;
  5. Maintain accurate laboratory records and develop an understanding of record keeping procedures and ethics in biomedicine.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course.

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
