Course Description

This course provides you with detailed knowledge and skills to apply the law relating to marriage, divorce, matrimonial property settlements, children’s issues, spousal maintenance and child support. You will also examine the provisions of the Family Violence Protection Act and the Adoption Act and the related field of domestic relationships.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

1. Examine the jurisdiction of the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court
2. Analyse the law relating to a valid marriage to enable the preparation of legal documentation.
3. Acquire an understanding of family law principles relating to dissolution of marriage, children, child support, spousal maintenance and division of property, including superannuation to enable the preparation of legal documentation.
4. Evaluate the non-adversarial processes for resolving disputes in family law.
5. Examine legislation relevant to domestic relationships and financial disputes between domestic partners.

These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.
