Course Description

This course will develop the knowledge and practical skills required in project planning, with specific emphasis on scope planning and management. The objectives of this course are to develop the knowledge and skills you will require to successfully plan a project, including the development and implementation of a project communications plan. This course will also develop your proficiency in the use of project planning and monitoring software.

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Determine and apply knowledge of complex project management theory to your professional practice and/or further study
  • Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse project management stakeholders
  • Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
  • Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives


 


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Apply project planning processes and techniques to develop a practical and manageable project plan
  2. Justify the project design and approach by drawing upon project management theory and principles
  3. Analyse and apply project management principles to develop a project communications plan for industry stakeholders
  4. Utilise industry standard project planning software to successfully plan, monitor and control a project
  5. Formulate project aims objectives and deliverables to successfully scope a project

You will learn through series of face to face lectures and workshops. Learning activities in this course include case based case study exercises, class discussions, group work and computer based workshops.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of: 

Task 1: Group Assignment: The aim of this assignment is to plan, monitor and control a project using MS Project.  40% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4.  

Task 2: Individual Assignment: The aim of this assignment is to plan a product development project using Primavera P6. 30% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4.  

Task 3: In-class Individual Tests: The aim of these in-class tests is to evaluate student knowledge about the concept of project communications and communication management within stakeholders and to model a project by using MS Project and Primavera P6 toolkits. 30% weighting. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4.  

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
