Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You must have completed the EEET1316: Electrical Engineering 1 or equivalent courses and should have the proficiency in DC and AC circuit theory, basic computer competencies (run programs, use mouse, use PC), and basic power laboratory competencies (use electrical measuring equipment, safely wire electrical circuits, electrical test and measurement skills).

Course Description

This course introduces you to the design of electrical building services, i.e. electrical systems and installations that provide power, movement, communication, comfort and safety in modern buildings. Building services are designed by electrical engineers prior to the construction of new buildings, and before maintenance and upgrade work in existing buildings.

Particular topics to be investigated will include:

  1. Introduction to AS3000
  2. Selection and Installation of Wiring System
  3. Building Protection Design
  4. Earthing Arrangements and Earthing Conductors
  5. Lightning Protection Design for Buildings
  6. Lighting Design
  7. Building Management Systems
  8. Building Telecommunication Services
  9. Heating and Ventilation Systems
  10.  Building Services Sustainability and Lifetime considerations
  11. Commercial Building Microgrids
  12. Connection Agreements/ Tariffs

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. (This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onward. See the WAM information web page for more information.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At undergraduate level this course develops the following Program Learning Outcomes for students who commenced their program prior to 2023:

1.3 In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline.

2.1 Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving.

2.2 Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources

At undergraduate level this course develops the following Program Learning Outcomes for students who commenced their program in 2023:

  • PLO1: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding and knowledge of fundamental engineering and scientific theories, principles and concepts and apply advanced technical knowledge in specialist domain of engineering.
  • PLO2: Utilise mathematics and engineering fundamentals, software, tools and techniques to design engineering systems for complex engineering challenges.
  • PLO4: Apply systematic problem solving, design methods and information and project management to propose and implement creative and sustainable solutions with intellectual independence and cultural sensitivity.

At postgraduate level this course develops the following Program Learning Outcomes:

  • High levels of technical competence in the field
  • Be able to apply problem solving approaches to work challenges and make decisions using sound engineering methodologies

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Select suitable electrical components and equipment for a new building services system;
  2. Carry out basic calculations associated with the electric power demand and distribution in a building;
  3. Utilise the applicable Standards in the process of designing electrical building services;
  4. Prepare basic technical documentation of a new building services system.
  5. Assess the technology used in the existing installations and determine the modernisation options;
  6. Liaise with other building professionals;
  7. Address sustainability requirements.

Overview of Learning Activities

Student Learning occurs through the following experiences and evaluation processes:

  • Review of pre-recorded lectures where syllabus material will be presented and explained, and the subject will be illustrated with practical examples
  • Completion of tutorial problems designed to give further practice in the application of theory and procedures, and to give feedback on your progress and understanding
  • Completion of design assignments requiring an integrated understanding of the subject matter
  • Private study - working through the course material, and solving design and numerical problems
  • Site visits

Overview of Learning Resources

You will be able to access course information and learning materials online through Canvas. The learning materials for this course include:

  • Lecture Notes prepared by the teaching staff.
  • Tutorial problems prepared by the teaching staff.
  • Prescribed and recommended reference books.
  • Simulation software is available for you to carry out the assignments.
