Course Description
This course will provide you with an understanding of the Australian health care system, including public and private, community health care programs, support services and not for profit services. You will gain an understanding of how health care is funded in Australia and develop an understanding of different health professionals, and their roles and responsibilities within the continuum of care. Students will become familiar with health referral pathways, health records and confidentiality and knowledge in developing partnerships in health.
Students will also learn of different multidisciplinary care approaches applied on special populations in Australia, particularly the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and the responses to the ageing population.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Describe the model(s), structure and operation involved in the best practice management of the multidisciplinary health care system in Australia.
2. Describe the scope of disciplines and range of roles and responsibilities of health professionals within the Australia health system and their integration in public health and patient care models, including the referral pathways.
3. Identify the range of accessible services and networks within community health and primary health care environments.
4. Describe collaborative and relationship building practice for decision-making and team functioning in health care systems.
5. Explain common health issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and the impacts and challenges faced in health care service delivery.
6. Outline clearly the multidisciplinary approaches targeted at the Ageing population and the difficulties facing the health care system.

• Tutorial activities (individually and in teams): to discuss, debate, critique and solidify your ideas and extend your understanding around key concepts for each topic.
• Self directed study time (eg readings or activities around theory): to enhance and strengthen your knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts.
