Course Description
This course will advance your knowledge in structural elements, systems and services for the built interior environment. You will learn to analyse, assess and specify the appropriate specifications for a range of interior projects within residential and small scale commercial spaces.
You will prepare detailed technical drawings and digital presentations including layouts and documentation for structural, non-structural and services. Using a problem based approach you will gain familiarity with the critical path of an interior fit-out project.
A detailed work schedule will be developed for projects in consultation with industry specialists and professionals for verification.
All project work will be developed within the framework of Australian Standards, Building regulations and legislative and sustainable practices.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program outcomes:
- Engage with contemporary trends in the interior design industry and investigate related emerging and evolving manufacturing technologies and materials.
- Implement broad knowledge and skills of space planning, construction and fit out to select and specify materials, furnishings, colour and lighting for sustainable interior solutions.
- Apply knowledge and skills of current business and professional practices relevant to the decoration and design industry.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Analyse and interpret a project brief, site and specific structural components for proposed interior designs.
- Assess and specify locations and features of key structural elements and services.
- Use technology to prepare accurate and coherent documentation for complex interior design solutions.
- Use communication skills to liaise with industry professionals to develop a critical path for a project
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities will include supervised project work, independent investigation, peer feedback, reflection, site visits, demonstrations, audio visual presentations, online learning (blogs and wiki), studio work, guest presenter demonstrations

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include a range of activities such as in-class exercises, portfolio, models, reports and individual / group projects.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.
