Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Completion of structural design and analysis courses in a B.Eng. program or demonstration of equivalent capability.
Course Description
In this course you will develop an understanding of the dynamic behaviour of structures subject to vibration or impulse loading. In particular you will practise advanced analytical techniques to model the dynamic behaviour of structures in both the frequency and time domain.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes.
- Undertake advanced methods of computational mechanics, analysis, structural optimisation and design
- Undertake problem-diagnosis and treatment during the structural design and construction phase.
On successful completion of the course, you will be able to
- Assess the influence of site hazard and structural form on seismic response of structures.
- Recognise seismically induced failure modes and appreciate good design practice.
- Design structures for seismic regions with an acceptable probability of collapse whilst controlling damage.
- Select an appropriate numerical technique for analysis of dynamic events – time domain, frequency domain, explicit, implicit forms of analysis.
- Apply analytical techniques to assess short term impulsive loading – crash, impact, blast etc.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will develop the above capabilities through a modular blended learning approach comprising lecture/workshop sessions, on-line forums and team based studies.
You will work on selected case studies applying the theoretical approaches introduced through specialist lectures to develop the skills required in structural safety assessment.
You will be given an opportunity to focus your studies on a particular domain – impact, blast, vibration, etc
You will engage in on-line forums to share information and participate in case studies.
Overview of Learning Resources
Learning resources include software, case study materials provided in class, Australian standards provided through RMIT Library and recommended texts.
Overview of Assessment
Project assignment and exam demonstrating learning outcomes 1 – 5 above.
