Course Description
In this course you will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to teach writing to consolidate and extend your students’ literate and writing practices in the primary school. You will be introduced to theoretical frameworks that inform the teaching of writing and consolidate your knowledge about the interrelationship between writing and reading. Through experiential learning of authoring and illustrating a text you will identify the constructedness of texts and the implications this has for developing effective strategies and skills to support writing development in the primary classroom.

Your learning in this course is focused on development of the following program level capabilities.
- Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on educational policy and practice in both local and international contexts.
- Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
- Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.
At the conclusion of this course you will be assessed on the following learning outcomes:
- Describe relevant contemporary writing theories and practices and the development of writing
- Develop and design writing strategies for primary writers
- Discuss and analyse the interrelationship between reading and writing
- Apply skills in conferencing the authorial and secretarial roles of writing
- Reflect on and apply more effective personal literate practices.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be engaged in a range of activities including theory, task analysis and practical skill building and will involve discussions of readings, lectures, debates, hands on literacy activities, use of multimedia resources, library skills and study skills workshops.
