Course Description

In this studio-based course you will examine and investigate the historical, cultural and technological contexts for photographic image making. You will experiment with creative approaches and techniques in order to develop your ability to communicate visually and produce a portfolio of photographic work. Through reflective and critical analysis of your own work and that of others you will begin to develop individual agency as a creative practitioner within the discipline of photography.

In course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:  

  • Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge and specific skills in the discipline in which to base your professional practice or future study.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on the discipline in both local and international contexts.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

1. Interrogate the development of photography within a range of cultural, historical and theoretical contexts. 

2. Evaluate diverse photographic images and practices with reference to form, context, and meaning. 

3. Produce a range of photographic outcomes by exploring and applying creative approaches. 

4. Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on your work and the work of others. 

5. Explore and develop an ethical framework for your photographic praxis. 


Overview of Learning Activities

The studio will include a variety of activities such as fieldwork, experimentation, critical analysis, discussion, practice, presentation and reflection.

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face-to-face, online or a mix of both. 

 


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.  

You will have access to professional photographic equipment, workstations, studios and printers to support your learning.  While learning and assessment in this program can be completed using RMIT equipment and facilities, it is recommended that you purchase camera equipment and storage devices.  There may also be consumable costs associated with producing some assessments in hard copy. 

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services.
