Course Description

This first year core studio course introduces you to the material, conceptual and technical methods applicable to your studio major.
In this studio based course you will engage with studio, creation and enquiry. As studio based your learning will be activated through experimenting, exploring, composing, testing, envisioning, observing, and playing with a range of materials and art making processes in a studio environment to develop you as an art practitioner. The course is based around a series of structured projects that engage ideas about creativity and the nature of art practice. You will create a range of art works and related support material to establish the means to analyse modes of practice and models of aesthetics and meaning. You will develop knowledge and skills in analysing, responding and discussing your own work and the work of others. This course will initiate your Fine Art Studio Practice through the development of methods that relate to your studio major.

• Find creative solutions to constraints and challenges in a fine art context
• Effectively communicate via artistic production in a range of media and modes with awareness of and sensitivity to local and global contexts and cultures
• Develop a critically reflective arts practice, in order to continually develop, change and plan for a future that is both informed and improved by arts practice

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
• Identify and employ relevant studio specialisation methods in art making as a way of producing personal and cultural meaning
• Explore creative uses of materials and methods to develop your art practice
• Translate ideas, themes and concepts through diverse studio methods to make a body of developmental art works
• Produce a range of artworks that respond to structured projects
• Critically reflect on your work and the work of others.

Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will be encouraged to approach the studio as a process of creation and as a site of practice and enquiry. You will engage in a range of learning activities such as making works, experimenting with materials, practice based research, workshops, presentations, demonstrations, lectorials, gallery and site visits, reflective writing, group discussions, consultations on your studio work and occupational health and safety demonstrations.
You will also receive verbal and/or written feedback from academic staff and peers through a variety of consultations and tutorials. This feedback will help you to track how your learning is progressing against the specified learning outcomes and capabilities for this course. In classes you will engage in critical reflection and reviews.

RMIT University will provide you with a range of resources and tools to engage in this course, including options for studio, technological and workshop facilities, online systems and professional equipment specific to your projects and requirements. A selected range of supplies are available, as well as support from technical staff. You will also have access to a wide range of online and hardcopy resources through RMIT University library.
RMIT University is in close proximity to a broad range of galleries and cultural venues which you will be expected to access during the course. Professional workshops, labs and suppliers are also readily accessible.
Hong Kong Campus
Hong Kong Art School will provide you with a range of resources and tools to engage in this course, including studio and workshop facilities, online systems and professional equipment specific to your studio area. Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the learning outcomes of this course and on your development against the program capabilities. The work resulting from the application of studio methods will consist of a range of works and/or presentations that either respond to a project outline or are self-directed and will be assessed by academic staff. Assessment will include:
1) Folio of Resolved Artworks 40%
2) Application of Studio Methods 40%
3) Critical Reflection and Documentation 20%
