Course Description
This course is a workshop-based program in which you will focus on designing an urban project. You will developing spatial thinking skills for imagining and communicating urban design; analysing an urban context; researching, developing and interrogating scenarios and visions; and producing visual communication materials for an urban-scale design project that addresses contemporary issues at the forefront of resilience and sustainability of cities.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Critically analyse an urban context at an advanced level to provide the basis for urban design;
- Develop and refine a design vision for an urban-scale project that encompasses socio-cultural, economic, environmental, statutory, infrastructural and other key factors necessary for success;
- Demonstrate the use of visual communication and design skills for urban design to develop and interrogate a series of future urban design scenarios;
- Critically apply design communication materials to the integration of relevant theoretical and practical knowledge that engages with contemporary issues of sustainability and resilience.
Overview of Learning Activities
The primary learning mode is via project-based workshops supported by online material, individual and/or group fieldwork, observation and mapping tasks, discussions about key readings, research, interpretation of visual materials, analytic, synthetic and creative activities.

You will be able to access to a wide range of online learning tools and content for your course from the student portal, and RMIT Library resources. These resources will include book chapters, journal articles, media articles, lecture notes, bibliographies for supplementary reading, video, and links to external websites.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment in this course is designed to enable you to develop your visual literacy, spatial imagination and design skills. Assessment tasks are designed to encourage thinking critically and creatively about the importance of place, space and spatial relationships across the field of urban and environmental planning and design.
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes.
Feedback will be provided on all assessment.
