Course Description

This course examines principles, practices and factors influencing children’s overall growth, wellbeing and learning. You will explore pedagogical practices in relation to overall wellbeing of children birth to eight. In this course you will take a holistic approach to explore the relationships of science, nature, environment sustainability and health education in early childhood settings. Issues of environment and ecological developments have emerged as a global concern for sustainability in environment as it affects the world we live in. Teaching strategies to promote learning across the curriculum will be examined to integrate a participative, experiential and engaging program for children to construct meanings from their daily experiences in learning science, technology, environment and wellbeing.

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes  In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:   - Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.   - Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational contexts.   - Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.   - Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.


Course Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:   1. Engage professionally in an education setting with colleagues parents, carers and the community   2. Apply strategies to create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments   3. Understand different models of integrated learning across curriculum for birth to 8 (VEYLDF) and apply pedagogical strategies for teaching and learning of science, environment, health and wellbeing for children.   4. Develop knowledge on environmental education, science, technology, health and wellbeing   5. Develop capability to plan and develop activities to enhance children’s learning and understanding on the factors influencing growth, wellbeing, nature and bearing responsibility for the ecological sustainability of environments   6. Design and plan an engaging program to integrate learning across curriculum and drawing from a variety of pedagogical strategies


Overview of Learning Activities

This course is based on experiential and active learning where learners work individually or with others in the wider community to share and co-construct their knowledge and skills.  The course may include a range of activities from face to face, lectures, tutorials, workshops, outdoor exploration, parks, curriculum design and readings in order to support the development of the learning outcomes of the course. This course will be delivered face-to-face, with supporting materials provided online. You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as group discussion, group activities, readings, critical analysis, reflection, and individual research.   Work integrated learning is a major teaching and learning theme for this course and it puts you at the centre of the learning process and makes you responsible for your learning. This teaching team will support you in the development, progress and completion of your assessment tasks. This course involves the successful completion of professional experience; learning activities will ask you to link theory with practical areas of the profession in a variety of educational settings.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. There is no prescribed text for this course. Suggested readings from current educational literature will be provided on the course website and will be drawn from highly regarded academic journals, books and conferences as well as reports, websites and other online resources.   The University Library has extensive resources for teacher education students. Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.  Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.   Assessment may include Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups, for example: Task 1. Integrated program template and explanatory essay (50%) CLO3, CLO 4 Task 2.  Integrated Learning Provocation and mentor report against standards (50%) CLO 1, CLO2, CLO5, CLO6   Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.   If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods.
