Course Description

This course is designed to extend your knowledge of contemporary literacy teaching strategies and their application in the classroom. The course examines, in depth, literary texts for children, from picture books to extended novels. It is framed around the Capabilities in the Victorian Curriculum F-10 (creative and critical thinking, ethical, intercultural and personal and social capabilities). Emphasis will be placed on developing specific strategies for supporting student learning of the construction of literary texts and expressing their responses to literary texts.

Your learning in this course will involve a range of activities including online lectures, workshops, practical activities, individual tasks, collaborative group work, discussion and individual reflection.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

 

Assessment Tasks

Task 1. Select, annotate and justify the choice of four outstanding texts for F-2, 3-4 and 5-6 (35%) CLO1, CLO2
Task 2. Quiz: text analysis (20%) CLO2, CLO4
Task 3. Design a unit of work to support analysis and response to a literary text for upper primary students (45%) CLO1, CLO3, CLO4, CLO5
