Course Description

This course introduces you to the concepts underlying blockchain technologies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, and their applications in business. You will examine the rapidly evolving landscape of blockchain platforms, decentralized applications and smart contracts. You will investigate how blockchain technologies are transforming and disrupting a wide range of industries. You will critically analyse the application of blockchain technology to a specific industry or context and develop and implement a prototype decentralized application solution.

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

CLO1: Explain and discuss the key concepts of blockchain technologies, how they work and their transformative potential in business.

CLO2: Research and critically analyse the application of blockchain technologies to various business contexts and industries.

CLO3: Evaluate the opportunities and challenges facing organisations looking to leverage blockchain technologies in their industry.

CLO4: Design a decentralized application using smart contracts in a transformative case study scenario.

CLO5:  Design and develop a prototype of a decentralised application with smart contract programming.


Overview of Learning Activities

The course is delivered interactively with online lectures and two hour workshops each week. In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.
