Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Required Prior Study

Successful completion of GRAP2838 Fashion Practice Research Strategies and GRAP2849 Advanced Fashion Materials, Techniques, Expressions.

AND

Required Concurrent Study

You should undertake GRAP2840 Fashion Design Honours Research Project at the same time as this course as it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice.

Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.


Course Description

In this course you will refine critical skills developed in Fashion Practice Research Strategies and Advanced Fashion Materials, Techniques, Expressions in the gathering, synthesis, analysis, assessment and presentation of knowledge in the theory and practice of design, as well as its historical, social and cultural contexts. 

You will acquire advanced knowledge of current research projects and research methods in fashion design. By the end of the course you will have completed a self-directed research dissertation project on a topic of your own choosing in consultation with supervisors and teachers. This course can provide a pathway to postgraduate research.

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. See the WAM information web page for more information


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

PLO2: Demonstrate critical and ethical strategies to practice and communicate your knowledge of fashion in a global context.

PLO4: Employ individual and specialised fashion design skills and techniques in industry, fashion materials, communication and presentation.

PLO6: Work collaboratively with other practices, collectives, industry and community partners and cross culturally to plan and produce fashion design projects.

PLO8: Undertake research into contemporary fashion design practice and theory to explore possible industry and career directions. 


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Initiate, develop and bring to completion an exegetic research project in the theory, practice, history and/or sociology of fashion design, both independently and in consultation with supervisors and teachers.

CLO2: Gather, analyse, assess and present knowledge gained through research, in a form appropriate to the nature of the research project.

CLO3: Summarise research questions, methods, outcomes and significance in the form of an abstract.

CLO4: Effectively communicate the research as a formal, written exegetic dissertation or as a formal, academic presentation appropriate to the nature of the project.

CLO5: Critically reflect upon the relationship between fashion design research and fashion design practice, and knowledge of the role and importance of ethics and responsibility to a research project.

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class and online activities, workshops and supervision meetings that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities promote your ability to explore design, investigate, analyse and understand fashion practice.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome. They are as follows:

Assessment Task 1: Research Project Outline, 1500 words, 20%,
CLOs: 1, 2, 3

Assessment Task 2: Research Project Progress and Abstract, 3000 words plus images,10%
CLOs: 2, 5

Assessment Task 3: Research Dissertation, 7000 words plus images, 70%
CLOs: 4, 5
