Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Required Prior Study

You should have satisfactorily completed your Year One courses as well as GRAP2974 Design Discipline Theory – Spatial Concepts and GRAP2958 Design Discipline Project – Spatial Concepts before you commence this course.

Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.

Course Description

In this course you will further develop the work created in the GRAP2958 Design Discipline Project –Spatial Concepts course. You will learn and develop the technical knowledge and skills with 3D software in order to create 3D visualisation and final production of your spatial design work.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course supports your development in the following Program Learning Outcomes:

PLO 4 Apply advanced visualisation and representation skills (including use of drawing, modelling and colour) to support design practice.

PLO 5 Apply core technical skills and emerging design knowledge, skills and technologies, both independently and collaboratively, to enable further learning and professional practice.

PLO6 Exercise creativity, critical thinking and independent judgement to identify and solve real-world design challenges, and define and communicate innovative solutions.

PLO7 Apply planning, problem-solving and decision-making skills to the end-to-end design process.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1 Consolidate and develop a working knowledge of visual research and development skills, required for designing spaces.

CLO2 Evaluate a desired production outcome with attention to its pre-production requirements.

CLO3 Consolidate and develop a working knowledge of core digital production skills in 3D spatial visualization, while taking into consideration its integration in a production workflow.

CLO4 Demonstrate a working knowledge of a range of specialist practical and relevant soft skills particular to the domain of spatial design.

Overview of Learning Activities

The studio format gives you the opportunity to explore and apply social, contextual and theoretical design issues in depth and through a variety of approaches, technical principles, real and simulated situations and practical constraints. You will focus on identifying the specific skills you need to further develop your design abilities in the discipline of spatial design. Learning activities include:

  • Computer Lab sessions where skills are developed through prototyping ideas into digital 3D environments.
  • Developing a practice of journaling design ideas.
  • Lectures and studio tutorials.
  • Peer review processes.
  • Independent design inquiry and critique.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT University will provide you with a range of resources and tools to engage in this course, including studio and workshop facilities, online systems and professional equipment. A selected range of supplies are available, as well as support from technical staff. You will also have access to a wide range of online resources through RMIT Vietnam University Library.

Some projects that involve constructed outputs may require additional materials – this will be negotiated with the lecturer when the project scope is agreed.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course Learning Outcomes and on your development against the Program Learning Outcomes. Assessment may include projects, critiques, reports, journals, and/or presentations individually or in groups.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Process and Research Skills 40%, CLOs 1 & 2.

Assessment Task 2: Production Skills, 30%, CLO 3.

Assessment Task 3: Specialist skills task, 30%, CLO 4.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.

Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions.
