There are no prerequisites for this course; however, you will find a knowledge of biochemistry an advantage. 


Course Description

In this course you will explore the theory and techniques of proteomics, protein chemistry and protein engineering, and their application in the study of protein structure and function. Knowledge and application of protein technologies are needed in a variety of careers including medicine, agriculture, environmental, food science, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and forensics. As a result, this course will provide you with a broad basis for a variety of careers and for embarking on advanced studies in protein analysis and development of designer proteins for biotechnology.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. Review the underlying principles of proteomics and protein technologies and apply this  to solving problems in biological systems;
  2. Explain how a range of analytical, synthetic and molecular biology methodologies can be combined to elucidate structure-function relationships in proteins;
  3. Demonstrate fundamental techniques of analysis of proteomics and knowledge of high-throughput automated strategies used in profiling of proteomes;
  4. Apply bioinformatics for mining, tracking, filtering and interpreting complex data sets generated from structural and proteomic analyses (Critically review current research activities and technology developments in this field);
  5. Apply skills in information retrieval, critical review and analysis of scientific data and present it in a range of formats.
       


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:   

  • Online recorded lecture and live lectorial material where syllabus material will be presented, and the subject will be illustrated with examples and applications 
  • Tutorials/workshops designed to give further understanding of principles and develop bioinformatics skills required for analysis of proteins and proteomics datasets 
  • Private study, working through the material as presented in classes and learning materials

A range of learning resources will be used including web-based resources, textbooks, journal articles, lecture notes and training with online tools for protein sequence, protein properties and structure analysis.
